P.E. (Physical Education)
I love P.E.
I love swimming lessons.
(Pupil Questionnaire Feedback 2022-2023)
Intent:
We will provide at least 2 hours of a variety of both indoor and outdoor Physical Education activities to all of our children, making effective use of our inside and outside resources, both within school, our local community as well as wider opportunities.
Implementation:
Miss Grassi is our P.E. Co-ordinator. She holds the professional qualifications in Primary School P.E. Specialism and P.E. Subject Leadership.
At St. Mary's, P.E. is taught through "Physical Development" within the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum in Acorn and Chestnut (Nursery and Reception):
Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, 1 hour is taught as a teacher-led activity. Children get well over their other hour of P.E. activities throught independent play within the Early Years grounds.
We teach the P.E. National Curriculum in Birch to Oak (Years 1 to 4):
P.E. Programmes of Study Key Stages 1 and 2
From Nursery to 4 (Acorn to Oak) we use the Get Set 4 P.E. curriculum scheme for teaching P.E (part of Get Set 4 Education).
We have chosen to use Get Set 4 P.E. as, not only does it provide an inspiring curriculum for our pupils, but it also allows us to add in the unique elements e.g. swimming lessons, cricket sessions, we have that match our vision and targeted outcomes.
The following table shows which P.E. topics are taught throughout the school:

Miss Grassi works closely with Redborne Sports Partnership to develop our P.E. provision on an annual basis. Through the Redborne Sports Partnership we have access to the following:
- Training for our School Sports Leaders
- Training for Staff
- Bikeability sessions for Year 3
- Access to inter-school sports competitions
We have a wide range of both indoor and outdoor P.E. equipment.
We develop our P.E. provision each year through the Sports Premium. For more information about the Sports Premium, please click here.
To supplement our P.E. offer in school we also organise a range of Before and After school clubs. Details of the clubs we offer can be found here.
Impact:
All children are assessed in P.E. by their teachers, on a termly basis. Miss Grassi then analyses the attainment and progress of the whole school in this area. This information informs future teaching and learning in P.E.
